20" Monty KH20 Trials Unicycle
This is basically the Monty and Profile wheelset from my MKII but the cheap Taiwanese frame has been replaced with a long awaited Kris Holm signiture trials frame... and a few other bits and bobs too...
|
Strengths
Strength surprisingly enough! The frame seems very rigid, well made and more than capable if taking a beating. Couple that with a near indestructible 20" Monty trials wheel built round a Profile hub and cranks, a carbon fiber seat with a leather cover and unicycle handle and I'd be horrified if anything breaks.
The flat crown means I can now get started on one footed skills and gliding... when the ground dries out.
The double bolt Thomson seat post means I get to use the Wilder rail bracket I've had for some time. The ability to tilt the seat way up adds greatly to control on uphills allowing my thighs to come in to play to keep me heading in a straight line.
Weaknesses
The KH20 frame is heavier than the Taiwanese one I'd been using previously. Add to that the Wilder rail bracket and the Monty White Line tyre (I had been using the lighter X-Lite version previously) and we're taking in the regions of some 600g being added on to this unis earlier incarnation. I don't really notice it though to be honest.
The Easton Cully pedals are really great but the 3mm wide pins just aren't up for pedal grabs as they get bent flat against the pedal body... or just snap clean off. Atomlab Aircorp pedals eventually took the place of the Cullys and are much better for trials abuse
Overall
It offers a really solid ride and eliminates any worries about going for something and breaking anything. This leaves me only to worry about breaking myself ;)
This isn't a cheap unicycle so I guess it's only for those with deep pockets of a very friendly bank manager.
I'm still experimenting with Monty tyres at the moment but the White Line seems pretty good at 20psi - it's not as bouncy as it could be but I never feel it bottoming out on the rim when landing frequent 2-3 foot drops.
The Easton pedals I origianlly bought had to go as the pins on my pedal grabbing foot were too thin and either snapped off or bent flat. Atomlab Aircorps pedals came to the rescue.
Is this the ultimate mod trials uni? Darn right it is! For the time being anyway...
